Spoiling Tyranny

As the Tyranny of Dragons set goes into final typesetting,we provide you with a glimpse of what is to come. Specifically, two big bad boys that inspire with their unique champion powers, and whose point costs (64 and 46) seem reversed relative to one another. Its appropriate, because they are going to typically find themselves on opposite sides of a battle map.

The first among us is the Big Bad Bronze Dragon. He's good, but in a reluctant kind of way. Still, he plays well with Paladins. He costs a significant 64 points for your warband, so what can he do? (or what can she do? Really - I must admit I'm not super good at guessing dragon genders). With a champion rating of 1, you might not think a lot - but with the ability to push ALL enemies within 4 squares of it, with no to hit roll required, it can be an amazing disruption to a warband where figures like to be adjacent to each other, or some key terrain feature.

The flight speed of 8 is handy, providing a striking range of 22 squares by double moving with a breath weapon at the end (a very controlled breath weapon - a minor ranged attack). The dragon is particularly dangerous within 14, where it can move, spit, and charge, for a potential of 45 points of damage. It may not be an Ambush Drake, but the Noble Bronze can do some ambushing. Expect to see ambushing things as a theme in this set.

The second is perhaps not such a superb ambusher, but he is evil in his own way. (Most notably, in the black spot on the bottom of his card!). Large and in charge, the Orc Orog Fighter is considered a large figure despite his medium base. This Orog fighter leads his minions into combat, teaching them how to (literally) knock a target out of its armor. Or, to think about it another way, rendering that armor significantly less useful.

He has more HP than the dragon, for less points, but he's also a little slow, and not only in speed (5). His lumbering quality is also reflected in lower AC and reflexes. However, he can still use his massive club on a charging attack, dishing out 35 damage to those that come within 10 of him. Its also kind of a slow attack, which means that a target can try to take him down before getting clobbered. So, ummm... good luck with that.

The set will be ready very, very soon.

Great news, i like them both. The "Big" Power is interesting, and fixes the issue of the Orog being oversized for a medium creature.

I guess some of the larges, like the Stone Giant Elder and Frost Giant, might receive the same treatment and be considered Huges.

Thank you for the sneak peak, can't wait for the full release!

Oh YEA!

Like the dragon.

The Orog looks pretty weak. 10 damage for regular attack for a 46 pt piece? Although the massive club is pretty devastating.

The preview is awesomely appreciated.

Cool

It's been a while for me, but a 46pt fig ought to be hitting for 15, if not 20. Maybe even 25 with defenses like that. Am I missing something?

If you are missing anything at all, it is probably only that his secondary attack is repeatedly useable for 35 damage, for at least 20 points less than the next piece that can do this. The 10 damage is only for opportunity attacks - I can't see it ever being used otherwise. Didn't have to give him a basic at all, but I like the flavor, and the situational usefulness.

Edit: For 55 points you can get a nonchamp hill giant, +13 for 35. But he can't benefit from Orc synergies like this bloke can. (cough-cough cleric of gruumsh cough).

I like the minor action lightning jet. Could make the dragon very strong in melee as well when you combine it with a hellwasp or some decent defender.

I am sorry - but what is the thing with being Big, while occupying only a single square? I'm missing that. Sad

There are several game mechanics tied to a creatures size (+5 vs. smaller creatures). For those effects the Orog is Large, even if it occupies just one square.

More Cryptic (meme-like) Spoilers.

Chromatic Dragon Raiders have lots of potential breathing room.

Manes Demons are the bomb.

Lizzy Borden has gone Barbarian.

Zhentarim Bandits will drag you out of your comfort space.

Hobgoblin honor guards will take some damage for you, if they respect you.

When does forest terrain become like web terrain? (Ask a Druid, not a Drow).

Overheard on Page 1.
"I may be little, but Walls don't stop me. And I can make it so they don't stop you, either."

What a Paladin really likes to have, more than most creatures, is a Good ally.

One last thought.

When setting up your warband, try to guess which one of your creatures is actually your opponent's Doppleganger.

The hype builds up! Gotta get me some more mane demons if they are walking acid bombs. Curious about the Doppleganger now as well. Thank you for the teasers! Big smile

Looking awesome!

Question for Tried. Are you giving all of the figures in Tyranny of Dragons new / different stats? Minis in the Tyranny set such as the Horned Devil, Ogre Mage, Bugbear, Wraith, Frost Giant, Stone Giant, Mind Flayer, some of the dragons, Gargoyle, Pegasus, a few others, etc..., have the same name as old DDM minis. Will these have new stats or just give them the same as they were previously stated?

Just wondering.

Cool
