SKT Preview 1: There's a new boss in town.

SKT is all about the giants. They have finished design, but we are still playing with the development. But you've all been waiting very patiently, so I thought we could start sharing a bit of what's coming in the new set. There is indeed a new boss in town, and things could get bloody.

You'll see what I mean.

Potential grammatical or template typos aside, this is the final for the Night Hag.

I absolutely love this piece. She creates interesting synergies and warband-building scenarios, and I think she will be a welcome addition to the Metagame. On the one hand, she is defensively very strong at the beginning of a match. On the other hand, you can't wait too long to use her, because her defensive mojo only works while she is at full HP. There are lots of ways to hurt a creature in this game, and it only takes 5HP to throw her off her ghost form.

She is a low damage hitter, sure, but she hits very reliably, and almost automatically if you have other hags in a warband with her. This includes a potential sleep-inducing blast 5 attack, which, at +18, is almost unheard of in DDM. It comes at a cost of 5HP damage to her for every creature targeted, of course. You may be able to control this by how you aim the blast, if you don't really want to pay too high a price. On the other hand, if you don't care about her paying a big price in HP sacrificed, she can simply take a big hit if she can catch a group of targets in her blast, for the very real possibility of making several enemies helpless (save ends). Once she is bloodied, she doesn't pay the price any more, creating the nice thematic concept that she is, if anything, more dangerous when she is near death and desperate.

She's a fringe piece for certain, but I am pretty certain she will see play.

Thank you for this nice piece. Today iam paint my Invisible miniature night hag - iam hate invisible minis. I have only 2 more hags.. but +3 attack is OK Smile When iam blast 4 creatures at full hp, iam take only halved damage (10)?

Not exactly.
It says 'each time you target a creature' not 'for each creature targeted by the attack'

In this case, the four creatures would be 4 different triggers.
You take 1/2 of 5 (which is still 5) and you take it each time it is triggered independently (4 times).

In the end, there is no benefit to phasing for this.
But, you might consider other ways to cure HP on this figure afterwards.

Cool.

I also like how she sneaks a peek from behind the card Wink

A question: where do you draw the line between design and development? I.e. what is one but not the other?

Design. That's the initial idea, the first putting of pen to paper after a general consideration perceived gaps in the meta, potential new game mechanics, and interactions with other pieces.

Development does a couple things. It scrutinizes the wording of the powers, looking for triggers that will absolutely cause problems later in the game, and it similarly carefully investigates potential combinations with other miniatures that will be unacceptable for future play. Less dramatic, but still important are mistakes that can be made in grammar or templating during writing/re-writing that compromise professionalism, change meaning, or risk loss of uniformity that we are increasingly trying to achieve. During this process, alternatives are offered that keep the flavor of the piece. Sometimes, an idea is discarded as untenable, or 'untenable for now.' This is rare, however - and usually a piece morphs during this process to something balanced, playable and interpretable.

A very well designed piece, absolutely competetive. The "ghost - blood Magic" mechanic is awesome.
Thanks!
