Release the Dragons!

Here it is - the first full set in a very long time, and one that we think pushes the limits. Its a unique set that plays with the mobility theme without sacrificing too much on damage. Killer pieces invite new players to the game, but also makes for a fun sealed set to boot. Welcome to the Tyranny of Dragons.

The pieces are all legal as of...now. This is at least 1 month before the next major tournament. This also means that, together with the icons set, you have 50 new pieces to consider. We want you to consider them carefully. There are not many 'throw-aways' in this set. (As the price of miniatures increases, there is pressure to produce quality, after all.)

Whether you prefer an angel that acts as a guardian, an annoying needle blight that needs to be taken out quickly, a dragon that raids, or the chop chop chop of a berserk northern barbarian, I think we have something for you here. Fodder that specializes in killing fodder, and newer, higher cost pieces that we think are worth your time and effort to consider. That's true in the high end of the fodder class (with cool options between 5 and 10 points) and in the top end of things, where the titans live.

But, the final thumbs up or thumbs down will be yours to give or not.

I'm curious to know:
1) What piece are you most excited about and/or do you think is most powerful?
2) What piece do you think is weakest and/or most underpowered?
3) Any rules questions?

So my answers:

1) I'm personally most excited about the Human Paladin, because CR 4, and awesome healing and aura effects. Plus I love Smite Evil.

2) I'm a bit less excited about the Doppleganger. Tried tells me the tech is awesome and will wreck opponents' warbands (and I'm inclined to believe him), but for 17 points, I prefer a piece that does more fighting.

3) Rules question: what happens if the Doppleganger tries to switch places with a creature that occupies a space that's impossible for the Doppleganger to occupy? (For example a swarm creature or a rider of a mount) Proposed Answer: the power fizzles (and therefore the controlling player probably wouldn't try to use it in that case).

I'm super excited to see what happens with this set!

Another nice set. Thank you for creating these. I especially like Iries, Halfling Bard, Human Zhentarim Bandit, Lightning Drake and Pyrowyvern, all of which I have an immediate use for.

I'll go through them with a fine tooth comb later - I'm just hoping someone can get them into the warband builder so that they're legal for the World Champs in Italy. Some definitely look good to play.

The only problem that I have with creating a "temporary" patch to Pat Lynch's DDM Warband Tool (until the author gets around to adding them himself) is that I cannot extract the creature card images from the PDF. If someone were to create individual JPG files of the appropriate size for them, then yes, I could do it. I would have to add them to an existing set, however, since I do not have access to the source code, compiler, etc., because the set name filter is hard-coded somewhere in the actual program.

Just in case. If anyone wants to get some of these from other products, a number of the figures show up as single releases in the Attack Wing game, and some of them appear in the boxed board game "Temple of Elemental Evil"

From the Temple of Elemental Evil, you would get:

Boxed set figure D&D Miniature Name
Heroes
Aleros, Human Fighter Jaristan, Mountain Lord
Icons of the Realms Northlands Fighter
Barrowin, Gold Dwarf Cleric Vasara, Dwarf Paladin
Icons of the Realms Gold Dwarf Cleric
Nymmestra, Sun Elf Wizard Papa Tulipala, Firelass
Icons of the Realms Sun Elf Wizard
Ratshadow, Lightfoot Halfling Rogue
Pieni Tera, Halfling Rake
Icons of the Realms Lightfoot
Halfling Rogue
Talon, Human Ranger Jousimie, Woodland Scout
Icons of the Realms Human Ranger

Monsters
Velathidros, Black Dragon Black Shadow Dragon
Tyranny of Dragons 30
Bugbear (3) Bugbear Headbasher
Tyranny of Dragons 21
Doppelganger Doppelganger
Tyranny of Dragons 15
Hobgoblin Fighter (3) Hobgoblin Fighter
Tyranny of Dragons 12

as well as 13 other creatures from the (hopefully as yet to get stats) Elemental Evil expansion.
Note that as with all of these boxed sets (like Ravenloft, Drizzt, and Ashardalon) the figures come unpainted.

I've barely skimmed the stats. But I wish to convey my appreciation to those who have worked on this. I think names should be named, so that proper appreciation be forwarded to the deserving Smile I know Tried and, I believe, Ira, worked on this, but who else?

Credits are listed on the last page!

Regarding sealed events, thanks for the nice comment, Sirokh. We definitely had sealed in mind when designing/developing this set!

Credits listes on the last page: oh so they are! Then thank you to Ira, Tried, Tried's son (I assume that is who DG Stupack is?), Ville (who goes by Alepulp? Or am I confusing people?); and to James: who is James?

Ville and I are not the same person - Ville is Justjooavian, and knows the rules much better than I do. The difference is that he's about 7' 10" tall, and I am 2' shorter

The blue dragon raider refers to earth enemies.

What does this mean?

* Use when a creature targets an Earth enemy with an attack that does lightning damage: That attack is an automatic hit and automatic critical hit.

This would be an enemy with the keyword Earth.

There are more than 15 creatures that have the Earth keyword, and this number will increase with the next set of miniatures to be statted.

Just printed the new cards off today. For some reason, they came out smaller than the previous cards, even when I adjusted the settings on my printer. They only fill a little more than half of my standard sized card sleeves. I can still read them but just barely. Some guys who may want to play this with me will probably ask for a magnifying glass Smile Is it intentional that they be so little or did I mess up my print somehow that I'm not seeing?

I like the look of them. I got the Pyrowyvern and Nobel Bronze Dragon in my first box of the Tyrrany of Dragons minis set so it'll be interesting to try it out with them. The Pyrowyvern has some neat powers on the DDM Guild cards. It's cool that he can do both fire breath attacks and still poison sting with his tail. It's neat that the Bronze Dragon can move enemies closer and can buff up allies for a round. Nice feature for a good dragon.

They were on a standard template. Is your printer printing them portrait instead of landscape?

With Tried's blessing, I uploaded a new version of the Tyranny of Dragons.pdf, with a notable update to the Half-Dragon Antipaladin. The original link still works, and it goes to the updated file. Many of his powers have changed, and the Infiltrator power is modified to work as design intended. Specifically:

[] Infiltrator: Use during setup: Choose a Human ally that costs 6 VP or less. That ally cannot have items assigned to it and starts off the battle map.

[] Traitor Revealed: Use when you win initiative and the Infiltrator is off the battle map: Remove from the battle map an enemy that costs 6 VP or less (score nothing). Place the Infiltrator in a square last occupied by that enemy.

He also gets a new champion power:
Use at start of this creature’s turn: Evil creatures have +2 attack until end of round.

I believe all the rulings will be clear now, but just to confirm: cost means printed cost on the mini, not counting items. A 6 point creature carrying a 4 point item can be targeted by Traitor Revealed. An 8 point creature with a -2 cursed item cannot be targeted by Traitor Revealed.

Are There some special stats for invisible minis?

What?

No special stats for the invisible versions of some of the minis. Sorry if that's a disappointment, but it didn't make sense to give all of those creatures invisibility. If you have copies of the invisible versions, I recommend building a warband with Gnome Trickster or something else that grants invisibility so you can use them and feel especially cool. Smile

One question about the Wolf Clan Barbarian. Its 40 whacks attack says : 10 damage AND make a 40 whacks attack. Is it once only? I'm guessing yes it is, but on all attacks like this kind i've seen, there is a limit written: (ex: maximum 4 per turns). Cause this could be done over and over as lond as i roll good dice....
