Call for Qualifier Applications

How to host a qualifier at your FLGS?

There have been a lot of questions from DDM Guild members as to how qualifiers will be handled in 2009. The DDM Guild will sanction Qualifier Tournaments for the 2009 D&D Miniatures Constructed Championship, to be held at Gen Con Indianapolis. The top two to four finishers in each tournament (depending upon tournament size) will receive a bye through every game in Stage I of the Championship tournament this year.

The Guild will support these efforts, but qualifiers will need to be grassroots-organized tournaments in 2009. We’re confident that this can happen. Various events that have occurred over the last few years, such as the California Open, Midwest Open, Northeast Open, and NeonCon clearly demonstrate what a quality, locally- organized tournament can achieve.

In the past, qualifiers have been awarded to stores with a solid record of holding DCI-sanctioned events and, in some cases, a history of hosting past D&D Miniatures Game qualifiers. The system has worked, but each year we all hear suggestions for alternative qualifier locations. So, what makes for the best qualifying experience? How can we assure the highest possible quality in qualifying tournaments this year? We want you and your fellow DDM Guild Chapter members to tell us.

The DDM Guild is calling for applications from Guild Chapters and local stores to host a 2009 D&D Miniatures Constructed Championship Qualifier Tournament. Email us with your application by Friday, April 10th. In your email, please answer the following questions:

[1] At what location will the tournament be held, and why is your location perfect for a qualifier?

(For example: Is it at a gaming convention? Is there a large local DDM Guild presence? Is it central to several Guild Chapters? From what areas would you expect to draw people for the tournament? Is the store large enough to accommodate the expected number of players?)

[2] When will the tournament be held?

(The Guild prefers that all qualifiers to take place between May 2nd and June 20th, 2009.)

[3] What local support will be devoted to the tournament?

(What prizes can be provided? What other fun activities or plans are there to optimize the experience of attending a qualifier? Will there be any giveaways? How will the Qualifier be advertised? On web forums? Store website? What will the registration cost? Will this be able to cover the prize support. If not, do you have a sponsor?)

Applications will be reviewed, and hosts will be notified, by Tuesday, April 14, 2009. The DDM Guild is planning to support qualifiers in up to 12 locations but reserves the right to award more or fewer, depending upon the overall quality of applications.
