Repaint June 2010: Legion Devil Legionnaire

Megan Smith, a valued community artist and Chapter Master in Brisbane, Australia, really liked getting Organized Play repaints. So much that she took it upon herself to bring the fifteenth in her series of monthly DDM Guild Repaints. Up this month: the Legion Devil Legionnaire from Monster Manual: Savage Encounters.

Paint needed: Devlan Mud Wash, Badab Black Wash (from Citadel/Games Workshop)

Normal Painting supplies: paintbrush, water for rinsing the brush, paper towel.

Hopefully this repaint will help fix the bright pink skin of the Legion Devil, and will also darken and ‘dirty’ it to be a little closer to it’s Monster Manual Picture.

Steps

1. Clean your minis

Wash your hands first, then scrub each D&D Miniature with a toothbrush, using warm water and dishwashing liquid. Then, scrub again with just the warm water to make sure there’s no oil, soap, or anything weird on the surface of the mini. Throw them onto a paper towel a couple of times to knock off most of the water, and then leave them to dry.

2. Wash whole mini with Devlan Mud

• Shake the bottle of Devlan Mud wash, then open it carefully.
• Dip your brush in the rinsing water and brush it gently on the paper towel to remove excess water.
• Dip your brush into the wash and apply it liberally over the whole mini. It should flow off reasonably easily and fall off the high points, into the creases, bringing out all the details. Pay particular attention to how it falls into the low point between the toes, and around the detail of the face. Make sure you get some wash on everything, cause it will really show up if anything is missed.
• Keep getting wash and putting it on the mini until it is reasonably covered. If it pools anywhere it shouldn’t, use the brush to move it to other spots. For examples, see the pictures.
• After you’ve done each mini, it’s a good idea to rinse out your brush.
• Leave the minis for 20-60 minutes to dry (exact time will depend on the weather).

3. Wash the armour with Badab Black

• Shake the bottle of Babab Black wash, then open it carefully.
• Dip your brush in your rinsing water and brush it gently on the paper towel to remove the excess water.
• Dip your brush into the wash and apply it liberally over the armour, sword and shield. It should flow off reasonably easily and fall off the high points, into the creases, bringing out all the details. It will bring out the shape of the plates in the armour, and darken it all. Make sure you don’t miss any of the armour, cause it will really show up.
• Keep getting wash and putting it on the mini until it is reasonably covered. If it pools anywhere it shouldn’t, use the brush to move it to other spots.
• After you’ve done each mini, it’s a good idea to rinse out your brush.
• Leave the minis for 20-60 minutes to dry (exact time will depend on the weather).
