Notes on optional entry: I wanted there to be an option for a prize but didn't want there to be an issue for those with out Paypal or similar options. Paying to enter is encouraged but optional. 100 of % pool goes to the winners.

Notes on being able to switch bands: In previous online events players seem to get discouraged and drop out after a loss or two. This will let them try something new if desired and stay interested rather then be stuck with a band they thought was a good choice but ended up flopping.

Not playing a match in the week: Both players will be given a loss. If they can make it up the following week (thus playing 2 matches) this results will be replaced. It will dink with the swiss pairings a bit but I should be able to make it work out. Going 2 weeks finalizes the double loss.

Please try to be flexible in pairings! People will be in different time zones.

No one? or is everybody sending their signups to Bshugg without commenting here? Wink

I will sit out of this one, but I volunteer to be an impartial judge if any rules issues arise or tournament procedure.

Have fun!

I'm thinking about it. Surprisingly, a single week to play a game is not obvious for me - I can totally understand wanting to organize it this way though. I have my kids 1 week out of two, I'm playing in a theatre play on Sept. 29 (with what that means in prep time the week before), and some weekends I have stuff planned. Assuming i'd play vs. a European opponent, this forces me to play weekend afternoons and those are generally unavailable time slots for me. I want to, but because of this I don't see how I could.

To Koen: I did just that. Dunno bout the others, tho.

A few ideas:

Any reason not to allow two weeks per match? If people are getting done faster, you can always pair the next round immediately. But it doesn't seem too strict anyway. Also, if you have few people you could do round robin and then you won't need to wait for pairings at all.

For entry fee, if someone doesn't pay to play but wins the event, will you just give the prize money to the top finishers of those who paid? Also, it's worth specifying tie breaks. I suggest:
- total wins (single time won't be a factor)
- strength of opponents (drop the lowest)
- point differential total (negative if you lose, positive if you win)
- random

Finally, maybe use this event as a chance to try out some of the balance improvements you were suggesting? Maybe give HFL -2 AC and make the now single use to see if anyone still plays him? Reduce the drow champs to +2/+5. Do something to onyx and azurion, etc. Doesn't need to be a lot of changes, but those few could be tested out to see if other warbands flourish.

How many people have signed up? If you have an odd number, I'd consider joining.

so far? 3 of us. Sad

I set it to a week because when we did them before with a dozen or so players roughly half would struggle to get 1 game in a week. People are welcome to use the client at any time outside of the tournament league! Smile

I would, if I could spare the time - new job, and lots of pressure

A lot of people said they don't have SKype. It's free to download from skype.com. It will auto work with a laptop microphone or a microphone on a headset. Very easy to install.

I still dont have Vassal and asked where to get it in another thread and no one answered. Are there other playing options?

Is the engine still this one? http://www.vassalengine.org/download.php

The last I read about the DDM mod was on this site (posted last year), when alepulp said he'd post it on the DDM Guild facebook page.

I've been counting on the version I have, myself. My module version is DDM 2-1-2, downloaded in May 2013. Will have to try it beforehand to make sure it'll work.

I do not know of other viable options.

I will get a step by step guide set up for you on how to download and install it. There should still be a guide on how to use the client somewhere but if I can't find one I will make one.

Of note: Vassal may work better, but Roll20.net can be used as a real-time medium for DDM. Ira and I just finished our third game on it in PbP format. We ended up doing a few live turns in each game, when we would coincidentally log on at the same time, and it works fine in real-time.

Essentially how you use roll20.net:

1) you download the map image and resize it to have the squares on the map aligh with the grid; in the "map" layer.

2) you download the creautre images and resize those that are not medium to fit the proper number of squares (e.g. 2x2); in the "creature" layer. The creatures will then auto-align in the map squares so you dont need to micro-adjust their position, they are magneted into the squares.

3) you can copy-paste all creature info into the creature screen that is accessed by double-clicking on a creature icon. So no additional windows are necessary, as you then have 100% creature information in-game.

4) you can display HPs and other info to be more readily accessible than in the creature screen, on a summary circular menu that appears around the creature when you single-click it.

5) you can add tags such as colored dots to identify activations, stats (bloodied), conditions (stunned) or the like, very easily, on the creature icon itself.

6) if both players are logged on at the same time, you can see the creature icons being moved on the battle map, live.

7) you can have an "off the map" area where you can lay down item images, dead creatures, creatures that start off the battle map, and all your creatures before the start of round 1

8 ) you have a text chat feature included. Presumably people would use Skype, but text remains an option on roll20.net.

9) setup takes about 20 minutes by one player, considering the need to download images for map and for all creatures into a library for the game; and then say another 10 minutes per player to copy-paste creature info. Or maybe a little less time than that, but it gives you an idea.

I'm simply sharing this in case Vassal, that I have never used, has some challenges that are overcome by roll20.net and the latter was never explored. I doubt it, since DDM players have probably found Vassal to be superior, but I prefer sharing and letting you decide.

Okay, I'll try to jump into this tournament. We seem to be a small number of participants, so this might hopefully help with flexilibity of game scheduling.

So, write my name down please, and thanks for organizing this!

Questions:

1) will there be a time limit for playing an online game? If so, what is it, and does it include setup or not?

2) are other houserules contemplated, such as those proposed by Ira? I would find it fun to try some of these out:

  • +2/+5 for the two drow champs
  • lodestone does not allow shift
  • azurion has limited blindsight (say, 10 squares?)
  • onyx has single use per turn for its minor spit attack
  • large bases can spill outside of start area
  • some maps not allowed? (is it required to remove hellspike if azurion is limited to blindsight 10? or is it something else that makes that map too important?)
  • HFL -2 or -3 AC
  • champion powers have effect on a maximum of one selected attack per turn. (This is a meta shaker, not sure if you want to try it?) E.g. if an attack action allows multiple attacks or to otherwise attack mulitple targets, then the champion power only affects one of the attacks.
  • others?

But really I don't mind no house rules at all. I'm just here for the fun Smile

I like all of these:

Quote:
+2/+5 for the two drow champs
lodestone does not allow shift
onyx has single use per turn for its minor spit attack

I also like:
HFL -2 AC AND single use bow (or maybe double use if people feel like that's too much. Without the bow, he has a real weakness.)

And for Azurion, I'd leave Blindsight as is but fix the Sandstorm to be radius 1 within 10, or maaybe radius 2 within 10.

I'd love for this event to be an opportunity to test out these changes - seems to me that drow will still be dominant, since +2/+5 is still quite strong. But maybe these changes would let more diverse options enter the field?

Guys.

Its not like we only see Drow warbands. or HFL. There are other competitive bands out there.

A real problem right now is likely Lodestones. i've been watching the item for the last 3 years.
It needs to be a Unique item.

Another real problem right now is ANY creature with blindsight AND area attacks WHICH are SIGHT range.

Another real problem right now is how HIDE works for large creatures, like Onyx.

Lets ditch the panic until the next set drops, the new rules are finished, the compendium of items is updated, and spring hits.

Yes, but winter is coming...

Seriously though, I was advocating in the other thread about eventual additional corrections to game pieces, that it's too early for that.

My proposal for house rules for this tournament, is just for fun. I'll follow Bshugg's decision one way or the other.

Generally, part of the fun is simply discussing this, and substituting for the role of designer. Like I like to discuss line selections by the coach in hockey, with my friends.

So I had a bit of a personal delay but I will get this organized this weekend. Last call for late joiners! Would LOVE to have a few more entries. Please consider attending even if you can't make all the rounds just so we can up the activity.

Can you comment on who has signed up so far? I will consider it seriously, especially if players are free to play on roll20.net if they both agree (Louis and I have had good luck with the site, and playing on it live is very easy).

That said, I'm also happy to consider Vassal if you could post a step-by-step guide of where to download vassal, where to get the DDM module, and the step-by-step of connecting with someone else to play.

Thanks!

Also, either way, I offer to be a judge for any rules situations that come up. If it's for my own game, then someone else should be appointed 2nd judge. And just in case, there should also be a 3rd judge, in case the 1st and 2nd judge are playing.

Personally, I'd rather have this first tournament be purely for honor, without any money on the line, since that can more easily lead to bad feelings.

Thanks for organizing!

My scheduling issues keep bottling up. Work-related surprises compared with everything else. Been aching to play more but... it seems unlikely I'll be able play before some time in November. I don't mind conceding a game when I have to but it would leave my opponent without play so to be fair to others playing I thought I'd bring this up before the league starts and pairings are made. I can join in once I get suddenly rare "free" time more... free. I'm sorry about the bad timing!
