Summer 2017 Restats and GenCon Alpha v3 rules

We've been keeping on eye on creatures that seem overpowered, or are otherwise bad for the health of the game. There are four creatures that we've modified to ensure the metagame stays healthy and diverse. Without further ado, you can see them here:
Summer 2017 Restats

And you can also see a list of all restats to date here:
All Restats

Also, specifically for GenCon players, we will be using many of the new, improved v3 rules for every event (except the 200/8 championship, since technically these rules aren't announced with sufficient notice).

Selected Alpha v3 Rules for use during GenCon 2017

Other players are encouraged to try out these Alpha rules and let us know how it goes (perhaps even at Euros?!). You can use the "Comment" feature on Google Docs to add comments directly to that file if you have questions or feedback. We will be working to finalize these rules soon!

Thanks Dwayne and Ira for your continued efforts to maintain and improve on this great game!

I look forward to reading the Gencon and Euro Champs reports to see where the meta will shift to, with the restats and SKT creatures having come out!

Well, I decided to respect its summer time and some of the guys are out for holidays (and me too) - only 11 days left and its short time to re-arange prepared warband (I am sure some HFLords will be there) - so EU champs goes with old rules and without new restats.

Huge nerf on the yuan-ti, wonder if it will still see play like this.

I think there is a mistake at the bottom of Azurions card btw, black dragon lurker should be something else.

Thanks for the restats, good work. Damage output of Onyx is still huge for the cost...

HFL is now also Underdark - is this intended?

Wow, sorry for my errors.

They should be fixed, if you refresh to get the files.

Human Fighter Lord should only be Borderlands + Civ, as usual.

Azurion's stat card is properly used by Dragon Collector’s Set: Young Blue Dragon, or Deathknell: Large Blue Dragon.

Regarding the balance change to Yuan-Ti Halfblood Sorcerer, Dwayne and I went back and forth about it. In the end, this piece still has very sold offensive and defensive stats for the cost. The base attack is quite reliable at +20, and the two lines and Hide means that it will often be attacking with combat advantage. Also, Dwayne has a sense of what's coming in future designs, so it's possible there will be a Yuan-Ti champion in the future, so giving this piece a little more room from the top may allow more interesting future designs for Yuan-Ti.

Also, to be totally honest, even if this piece is now seen much less often, that's not necessarily bad, since we want the metagame to be fluid, and not always see the same pieces over and over. At the very least, I'm hoping we got Human Fighter Lord right...

Obviously it's your event to run at Euros, but I really hope you will choose to use these restats!

Personally, I'm in the situation described by Matob. This last minute restat induces me to re-arrange my warband Shock

And there is short time to play-test new warbands.

But I will adapt to any decision, obviusly. Smile

Uggh! This is hitting all my favorites despite them absolutely deserving it. Smile

My views:

Fighter Lord: All changes needed and even still, he's tier 1 rather than the absolute best thing in the game. He is still a very viable fig and running 3 of them in a band is still a very strong option. It's just no longer an auto win against most of the field.

Onyx: Onyx is still very good in the current rules but the mega nerf to line effects coming up is going to push all line effect attackers way down in the pack. He will probably be one of the few remaining good ones. The rule changes makes me want to abuse him one last time even with the nerfs in place.

Azurion: The only one on this list I haven't played myself but have faced a few times. He can still probably get off turn 1 nukes but has to burn his haste to do so. It's where he should be for it. Still a very good fig and I think he maybe should of gotten a little bit more of a reduction. Compare his raw stats to other figs in his price range with out taking into account his special abilities....

Yuan-ti Sorc: This one is a bit of a head scratcher. He was the most fair of the figs on this list but got the heaviest nerfs of the group. The rule change nerfs to lines was probably enough to make him much lower tier by itself and this change to everything else really makes him pretty tame. Still Im happy to see some changes even if a few figs get hit a bit too hard.

Over all I'm very happy with the changes. I would of liked to see 2-3 more figs on the list but will take what we got.

After these changes settle in I think Drow safely sit as the top band. They are incredibly flexible to build around with great hitters, great fodder, and no weaknesses like elemental damage to resist or being ranged attackers to hide/invis from. They have above average AC on their big threats and seem to have above average attack values to make sure they can hit their targets especially with the champ buff of the Deep dragon or Drow Captain. Drow get a tiny nerf with the changes to cursed items as they can typically use a lot of loadstones and rot scarabs to leverage in an extra hitter.

The changes to charge will hit the Drow pretty hard, Brad - this is a large nerf to the scout. But it does leave the drow viable, I agree.

I agree with Martin - EU Champs goes ahead without changes because of the complications it can cause.

Martin is correct in his ruling. Any changes must be announced a month in advance. It is part of our organized play rules.

I really wanted to have things out earlier, but as it is I will be lucky to come, and I certainly won't have any warband ready to go...or practiced with.

Will Gencon nonetheless include the new rules and restats, since it is also within 30 days of their issuance?

I do not mind since I will not be there, but I'm curious. From an outsider's point of view, I would hope that they new rules and restats are used so that we can witness the shift in meta Smile

And by the way, just a few days from the Euro World Champs and a couple of weeks from Gencon, where are the boasting, the (empty) threats, the raised fists, THE BLOOD!???

One of the very nice things about the Euros is that although we like to be competitive, it's also for fun. We all contribute to the prize pool and we (usually) ensure that the game is about fun, firstly, and winning, secondly. I have had players remind me of something I should have done, and I have done so myself to help others. That's part of the camaraderie. Unlike a convention, this is all about DDM and getting to know new people, and old friends. It is the latter I enjoy most nowadays (although I also love the game).

Of course, the reigning champion, Koen, isn't going to be there, so we will crown a new champ. There are several people in the pool who could be that. IIRC two of us have already been champs, Martin and I.

Sadly, it's worse attended in terms of Germans, Dutch (Joost being the exception) and the Finns, who are all excellent players too, this year. Stuart hasn't been able to join me for a couple of year, but you never know... maybe next time?

So, yes, GenCon will use them, except for the 200/8 event so we can have a fair comparison with Euros. GenCon is also a friendly environment with a focus on community over competition, though obviously people will also try to win. It seems like we're going to have very nice prizes, courtesy of Moraturi and Dwayne.

No problem. I know from doing a lot of document editing myself that it's almost impossible to catch every mistake, even when you've looked it over many times. Always helps to have someone else look at it. I'm glad to see so much activity on here. I'm afraid I've been away from the game way longer than I intended to. I'm hoping to get back into it. It'll be an uphill battle to get anyone in my area in Las Vegas to play it again. So much competition for players now. On the other hand, games with minis and cards are more popular than ever, so maybe I can convince people to give this game a go.

I always look forward to the cool repaints you do GF! More DDM humor and podcasts as well!
You really should share the funny images you made on here. People would get a kick out of them.
