DDM Guild Repaint May 2010: Goblin Skullcleaver

Megan Smith, a valued community artist and Chapter Master in Brisbane, Australia, really liked getting Organized Play repaints. So much that she took it upon herself to bring the fourteenth in her series of monthly DDM Guild Repaints. Up this month: the Goblin Skullcleaver from Monster Manual: Savage Encounters.

Paint needed: Macharius Solar Orange foundation paint, Devlan Mud Wash (from Citadel/Games Workshop)

Normal Painting supplies: paintbrush, water for rinsing the brush, paper towel.

The idea of this months repaint is to make a mini that looks less plastic than the normal version, by bringing out some of the details in the sculpt. It should also work well as the leader of some other goblins.

Steps

1. Clean your minis

Wash your hands first, then scrub each mini with a toothbrush, using warm water and dishwashing liquid. Then, scrub again with just the warm water to make sure there’s no oil, soap, or anything weird on the surface of the mini. Throw them onto a paper towel a couple of times to knock off most of the water, and then leave them to dry.

2. Paint the Cloak and Necklace Orange

• Shake the bottle of Macharius Orange paint, then open it carefully.
  
• Dip your brush in your rinsing water and brush it gently on the paper towel to remove the excess water.
  
• Dip the tip of your brush into the paint. It’s often easier to work from the pool of paint in the lid. Paint the necklace orange, it’s important to get complete coverage on the outside edge, but in under the chin doesn’t matter because it will be covered by the wash.
  
• Paint the whole of the cloak, remembering to get the bottom edge, and the bit peaking round the left side of the body, try to keep the paint off the skin if you can. As can be seen in the photos, the coverage can be a little inconsistent, cause it will be cleaned up by the wash.
  
• Once they are all painted, leave them to dry (10-15 minutes, depending on the weather).
  

3. Wash with Devlan Mud

• Shake the bottle of Devlan Mud wash, then open it carefully.
  
• Dip your brush in the rinsing water and brush it gently on the paper towel to remove excess water.
  
• Dip your brush into the wash and apply it liberally over the whole mini. It should flow off reasonably easily and fall off the high points, into the creases, bringing out all the details. Pay particular attention to where it falls around the muscles, folds in the cloth and around the necklace. Make sure you get some wash on everything, cause it will really show up if anything is missed.
  
• Keep getting wash and putting it on the mini until it is reasonably covered. If it pools anywhere it shouldn’t, use the brush to move it to other spots. Use the picture to judge where and how big the pools should be – a pool round the necklace is a very good thing.
  
• After you’ve done each mini, it’s a good idea to rinse out your brush.
  
• Leave the minis for 20-60 minutes to dry (exact time will depend on the weather).
